Образы пространства и времени как способ индикации мировоззренческих установок Германа Гессе

Данное исследование направлено на выявление основных элементов мировоззрения немецкого писателя Германа Гессе, который использует систему пространственных и временных ориентиров в процессе постановки и решения антропологических и онтологических проблем. Категория времени занимает немецкого художника слова в связи с онтологической проблематикой и даёт возможность изучить соотнесённость духовного, временного и культурного бытия личности. Сложное отношение писателя ко времени имеет серьёзные психологические и экзистенциальные причины. Пространственно-временные ориентиры занимают важное место в иерархии изобразительно-выразительных средств.

Artistic and Functional Specificity of Chronotope in Hermann Hesse’s Prose

Concept of ‘chronotope’ is widely used in modern philosophy and philology. It fixes the idea of continuity of the spatial and temporal aspects of life in the consciousness of modern man. The study of features of the image of time and space allow deepening understanding of author’s worldview in works of art.

The subjects of my study are chronotope features in Hermann Hesse’s artistic heritage. For these purposes I used methods of close reading, discourse and critical analysis.

In my article, I shown Hermann Hesse uses a system of spatial and temporal landmarks in the process of formulating and solving anthropological and ontological problems. Thus, Hesse considers category of ‘time’ in connection with the ontological problems. In particular, he attempts the correlation of the spiritual, temporal and cultural life of the individual, to explore the means of literature. Writer’s attitude both to category of ‘time’ and time as substance is quite complex and contradictory that has serious psychological and existential reasons. In turn, the space in the Hesse’s novels is a symbol and metaphor of being. In his view, the human being realizes its creativity in motion. Characters of Hesse’s novels are travelers, pilgrims, tramps. They might go on a journey without a goal, finding and realizing it in the way, but may begin their journey, where it is impossible to maintain the status quo. Theme of ‘home’ as a locus (topos) is as twofold, as understanding of time is. The movement of a person towards home is both getting around to his own world, and the cessation of his motion, which is equivalent the death. Hessian ideas about time are included in the monologues and thoughts of characters, while the images of space present in the text implicitly, in the form of various literary tropes and figures of speech.

I conclude, in Hesse’s novels, chronotope is functional. Hesse used spatial and temporal images for solving anthropological problems: (i) in determining the properties of the person and his axiosphere; (ii) when characterizing certain psychological states and processes; (iii) in identifying the vector of man's inner world development. Hesse employs spatial-temporal landmarks for creating hierarchy of figurative-expressive means.
